Ruth Ridgard was named the Flagler Humane Society’s volunteer of the month for May.

Ridgard began her five-year affiliation with Humane Society as a board member.  After taking a hiatus, she was drawn back. Since her return, Ridgard has held a variety of positions, and has now found her niche in the Adoption Follow-up Department.

With more than 150 hours of dedicated volunteer service so far this year, the focus of Ridgard’s job is to gain feedback on adopters’ experiences at the shelter and make sure pets are adjusting to their new homes. This information is used to continually evaluate the adoption process and to resolve any concerns a new owner may have.

“My favorite part of this work is hearing all of the happy-ending stories,” Ridgard said. “One adopter I spoke with recently told me she had gotten ‘the best cat in the world’ from our shelter. Others tell me how much they appreciate us keeping in touch with them ... They are impressed that we care.”

To volunteer with the Flagler Humane Society, visit in person 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday to complete an application. Ask for Corinne Robbins. The shelter is located at 1 Shelter Drive, just north of U.S. 1 and Palm Coast Parkway.
