A resident of Brittany Lane in Palm Coast fired three rounds from his handgun late Wednesday night as a would-be burglar attempted to flee the scene, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Stephen Metcalf, 31, of 49 Randolph Drive, in Palm Coast, was arrested by Flagler County
Sheriff’s Office deputies shortly after midnight on Pine Lakes Parkway. He is charged with attempted burglary of an occupied dwelling and resisting arrest without violence. Metcalf was being held in the Flagler County Inmate Facility Thursday afternoon without bond on the resist arrest charge.

Deputies said Metcalf attempted to break in to the home at 147 Brittany Lane around 11:12 p.m. Wednesday. The resident, Marc Barbee, told deputies he was sitting in the dark home talking on his cell phone, when he heard a noise coming from the back rear sliding door.

Barbee said he armed himself with a .40-caliber gun and turned on all the interior lights in an attempt to scare off the would-be burglar. Metcalf fled toward the front of the home as Barbee ran out of the front door to identify the burglar and his vehicle. Barbee told deputies that Metcalf got into his burgundy Ford F-150 pickup truck and put it in reverse in an attempt to run him over. At that point, Barbee said he fired three shots at the vehicle trying to damage the tires, but Metcalf was able to flee the scene, according to deputies.

Metcalf was charged with resisting arrest without violence when he refused to cooperate with deputies during the traffic stop on Pine Lakes Parkway.

Deputies also said both men are familiar with each other. Barbee played a recorded threatening message he received from Metcalf on May 24.

The incident is under investigation.
