Plenty of comfortable beds scattered the streets of downtown Flagler Beach on Nov. 3. They weren't there for a communitywide slumber party, though. They were there for some good, old-fashioned racing.
Saturday was the rain date for the annual Fun Coast Bed Race, presented by Flagler Volunteer Services and the Kiwanis Club of Flagler County. It was rescheduled from the end of October because of Hurricane Sandy.
Suzy Gamblain, executive director of Flagler Volunteer Services, thanked Wheels in Motion and the city of Flagler Beach for help with the event.
The teams pushed their respective beds down the street while a team member was on board the bed. There were pit stops on the way to the finish line.
At the first pit stop, the players had to use claw hands to pick up and build a small tower with cans, then race off to squirt water into a small plastic cup with a squirt gun. Next, they had to run to the end of the street and to their next obstacle of tossing Goldfish Crackers into the bed riders’ mouths. Finally, after successfully catching a cracker, they were off to stuff a fluffy pillow into a pillowcase and then race to the finish line.
