Amy Higgs and Jimmy Gagliano were high school sweethearts and went on their first date in 2002. After a three-year break, they reunited after seeing each other at a Jacksonville Jaguars game in 2008. Now, they have been back together for almost five years and, as of Nov. 5, are engaged to be married.

The proposal came with a good deal of planning and improvisation. Higgs had been planning for over a year to run the New York City Marathon, and once she got onto a charity team, Gagliano saw how excited she was and he began planning the perfect proposal. He said he wanted to do it earlier, but he knew this would be the best place.

With Higgs’ 27th birthday being the day after the marathon, Gagliano figured the perfect proposal to his girlfriend would be to propose as she crossed the finish line of her first marathon.

Everything was set up: photographers, signs, you name it. But with the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, that plan fell through, and the marathon was canceled three hours after they arrived in New York.

But, the weekend was not a failure. After helping with relief efforts and spending time with family, Gagliano had the opportunity to propose at Lavo Restaurant, in New York, in front of his family at dinner.

“He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him,” Higgs said. “It was emotional for the both of us since we have been waiting for this day for over 10 years now. I remember back when I was 16 and he was 18, and our friends and family always said, 'You two are going to end up married one day,' and now we are on our way.”
