An 88-year-old Palm Coast woman died early Thursday morning and her 95-year-old husband is hospitalized after their home caught fire around 12:30 a.m., according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Edith Moss called to report her car was on fire in her garage at 8 Floral Court. Sheriff’s Office dispatchers notified the Palm Coast Fire Department and advised the woman to evacuate the home, but Moss said she couldn’t do that.

When deputies arrived on scene, the garage was fully engulfed. Attempts were made to locate possible residents, but those efforts were unsuccessful. The first fire unit to arrive began a search for the couple as the second arriving units began fighting the fire.

Within minutes, firefighters located Moss in a rear bedroom. She died en route to Florida Hospital Flagler.

Her husband, Nathaniel, was transported to the hospital where he was being treated for some inhalation.

The State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the blaze.
