Sometimes, it's about having fun

I’m not the kind of person who takes losing lightly.

Growing up, I was pegged as the kid who always took things way too seriously regardless of what it was. I wanted to win at video games, sports or getting my seat belt buckled first.

Everything was a competition for me.

But playing slow-pitch softball the last few seasons has taught me not everything is about winning and losing.

This summer, our coed team manged to catch some breaks and win the division championship.

The winning carried over to the fall men’s season, as we went 10-2 during the regular season and got the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. On Tuesday, facing elimination, we swept a double-header to stay alive. On Thursday, again needing a win to stay alive, the game wasn’t going the way I had hoped. I was frustrated.

But all it took was a little reminder from my father to put things in perspective.

“Hey, how about you have some fun out there,” he said to me as we trailed by about five runs heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

We went on to lose, unfortunately. But Dad was right.

I’m not sure I’ll ease up on my competitive nature. But, sometimes I have to remind myself that having fun is always the most important thing.

Bulldogs soccer gives back
The Flagler Palm Coast boys soccer team is off to a 3-0-1 start this season, but on Thursday afternoon, the boys passed up training to help Flagler County prepare for the communitywide Feed Flagler event.

The Bulldogs helped stuff bags that will be distributed to families in need as part of next Wednesday’s event.

The team sacrificed training, but the boys did something that will help thousands of people. Kudos to the Bulldogs soccer team!
