Palm Coast city staff recommended $20,000 in cultural arts grants to nine different organizations for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.

Ten organizations applied for a combined $32,000. The Philippine American Association of Palm Coast’s application was denied because it was submitted past the deadline.

The Palm Coast City Council discussed this recommendation at a Nov. 13 workshop and will decide whether to approve it at a Nov. 20 regular meeting.

Councilmen Bill Lewis and Jason DeLorenzo said there are revenues in the city’s budget that could, in the future, yield greater funding for arts.

But in a difficult economy, Councilman Bill McGuire and City Manager Jim Landon said they worried that arts programs might start to use the cultural arts grants as a crutch. McGuire said he hoped City Council could revisit its cultural arts funding during its next budgeting sessions.

“We need to say (to these programs), ‘Show me a plan of how you plan to become self-sufficient, because we are not a never-ending source of cash for you,’” McGuire said. “Sooner or later, they’re going to need to stand or fall on their own two feet.”
