Veteran Hank Hirschmann was drafted into the U.S. Army three years after graduating high school.
A New York City native, he graduated from Chelsea High School in 1948. He was drafted into the Army in 1951. After basic and advanced training in Fort Dix, N.J., he was sent to Germany and assigned to the 32nd Maintenance Ordnance Company on occupation duty in Austria.
His overseas duty lasted 18 months. While in Austria, he married his sweetheart, Geri Abeles. A year later, in 1953, he was discharged.
After the service, Hirschmann worked for New York Telephone until 1971. He later transferred to Jersey Bell until his retirement in 1987. That same year, Hank and Geri moved to Palm Coast. In 1988, they both joined the Palm Coast Veterans of Foreign War and have been active volunteers there ever since.
Hirschmann has been part of the Bingo Team for 24 years. The Hirschmanns have two daughters, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Hirschmann feels volunteers are priceless and encourages others to volunteer in whatever way they can. The post is proud to have him as a Palm Coast Veteran.
