Five students were expelled from Flagler County schools, including three bus expulsions, Tuesday evening by the Flagler County School Board through consent items at its regular meeting. A breakdown of each expulsion follows:
•A student heated a cigarerette lighter tip and held it to the arm of an eighth-grade student while at the bus stop, just as the students were prepraring to board the bus. The victim's parent filed a police report, which notes second- and third-degree burns and probably permanent scarring on the skin of the victim. The victim received medical follow-up for his injury. A charge of filed battery was filed against the student.
The student was expelled through June 2013 and has been placed to Everest Alternative School for a standard entry at home-zoned school. This student may not attend school or ride the bus with the victim in the future.
• A student was expelled from the bus through the end of the academic year for starting a fight on a bus by pushing another student from behind. The other student responded and a serious fight ensued. The bus was completely disrupted and there was danger to other students and the driver.
• A student was expelled from the bus after she engaged in a fight after being pushed as she walked down the bus aisle. The other student was seated and did not stand to engage. The student in question turned around and pulled the other student from the seat, and a fight ensued. The driver broke up the fight and stood between the two students.
The student who was pushed stood up on the bus seat and over the driver to re-engage the other student. The student was expelled from riding the bus through the end of the academic school year.
• A student was expelled through January 2013 after selling marijuana on the campus of a Flagler County school. The student will return through Everest Alternative School, and may re-enter a home-zoned school through recommendation of the administration following normal protocols. The student has been referred for drug intervention services, which must be completed prior to returning to his home school.
• A student was expelled from riding the bus through January 2013 after taking a pellet gun from his bag and pointing it over his seat toward the front of the school bus he was riding home. There are contradictory student statements as to whether he actually shot it or not. Students reported the student with the pellet gun to the driver, who stopped the bus to investigate. The student denied having the pellet gun, but it was discovered in his back pack.
