Anchor Boat Club opens fall season
The Anchor Boat Club opened its fall season Sunday, Sept. 23, when members set sail on a three-hour trip along the Intracoastal Waterway.
Kicking off the fall season means there will be monthly restaurant meetings. But it also marks the beginning of the giving season for the club.
The club will start collecting food for needy families, a Thanksgiving dinner for about eight families, Christmas presents for children and a large donation to the local food banks, which will be given out at the November meeting.
This will also mark the end of Commodore Joe Sermarini’s tenure. He will leave office at the club’s Change of Watch dinner and dance in January.

FHSAA to promote sportsmanship by observing high school activities
Efforts by the Florida High School Athletic Association over the past few months to emphasize sportsmanship in high school sports appear to be paying off, as suspensions arising out of football games are down more than 25% from last year, according to an FHSAA press release.
This news comes as the association joins in celebrations of National High School Activities Month, beginning with this week’s observance of Sportsmanship and Fan Appreciation Week.
“Athletics are a key part of many schools’ wealth of activities,” said Dr. Roger Dearing, FHSAA’s executive director. “Every educator’s goal is to keep students engaged and invested in their schools, and athletics is often the most visible way to foster school pride.”
Each week of October will feature a theme, and the first and third weeks of the month particularly pertain to the FHSAA’s area of emphasis. The week of Oct. 1-6 is designated Sportsmanship and Fan Appreciation Week, while the week of Oct. 15-20 is National Coaches/Sponsors/Advisers/Officials Week.
One encouraging indication is a comparison of suspension rates involving high school football. During the first five weeks of the football season, apparent rule violations have led to 101 suspensions. During the same time period of the 2011 season, 136 suspensions were issued – a 25.7% decline.
