As the sun shone down early Thursday, Oct. 4, a group of women chit-chatted while walking the trail at Waterfront Park. The group, absent the men who usually join in the twice-a-week walk, are part of the Just Move! Walking Program, which meets at various trails throughout Flagler County.
“I started it because I wanted to get people to move more,” said Marianne Harris. “So while it’s a walking program, we also look at other ways to get movement into our lives, such as not taking the closest parking space, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.”
As a running coach in Orlando, Harris saw the impact that running made in peoples’ lives, when coupled with better eating.
“What better way to start a healthier life than walking?” she said. “There are all kids of excuses — I haven’t been exercising, I’m not fit enough to walk — but even if it’s just five minutes at a time, it’s never too little to start. And if you do that, getting a group for the support and accountability is everything.”
For one group member, Rhenda Brodnax, the support of the group is helping her to stay focused on her goals.
“Just walk 10 minutes and it will change your life,” she said.
The group meets Monday and Thursday mornings and welcomes men and women walkers of all abilities. To get involved, contact Harris at 321-278-3774 or [email protected].
