For Joe Pessoa, his new restaurant Joenell’s Place is family affair.
“We're all together all the time,” his wife, Maria Reigota-Pessoa said. “We can’t get away from each other.”
But to them, that unity is a good thing. Pessoa opened Joenell’s Place nearly a month ago, and he works with his wife to bring Spanish-American cuisine to Flagler Beach.
“Food is in my blood,” Pessoa said.
Both Pessoa and Reigota-Pessoa were born in Portugal, and they both moved to New Jersey during their early adolescence. They met in America through a mutual friend.
Pessoa has been in the restaurant business for more than 25 years, but this is his first time acting as owner. He and his wife have spent the last three weeks getting acquainted with restaurant owenrship and attracting customers. They already have regulars.
Their son, Anthony Vieria, helps at Joenell’s Place when he’s not working at his own business, Tony’s Touch Auto Recovery in Flagler Beach.
“Let’s put it this way: My mom’s the secretary at my shop; I’m the busboy here,” he said. “We help each other out.”
Joenell’s is open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It’s located at 316 Moody Blvd. Call 693-4898.
