There are ways to treat your family and ways to treat your servicemen and women, and none of the right ways will land you in jail.
Paula Lynn Barker, 42, of Ormond Beach, pleaded no contest to charges she defrauded her son, who was in the military and deployed overseas. She pleaded the same to charges of fabricating physical evidence.
Baker will serve 150 days in jail, followed by three years of probation, as part of her plea agreement, according to an email from the State Attorney’s office.
According the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office report, Chadwick Barker returned from his overseas deployment in late September 2011, and he told authorities on Oct. 26 that he believed his mother had made 10 fraudulent charges on his debit card, totaling over $4,500, including several payments to his mother from Western Union.
After an investigation, Paula Barker was arrested on charges of fraudulent use of personal identification information, in February, and re-arrested Aug. 17 this year on charges of forgery and fabricating physical evidence.
The second charge stems from the forgery of documents indicating that she had power of attorney for her son.
The fraudulent charges on Chadwick Barker's debit card were for US Airways, Western Union, T-Mobile and Asurion Wireless.
