The forest was still as spectators sat calmly. A cavalry horse then quickly rode through the crowd with a soldier on its back, shooting his hand gun.
Then came the cannon fire.
The battle was on.
As Union and Confederate troops stealthily made their way through the covered forest, spectators were transported back in time for the Pellicer Creek Raid, a Civil War battle reenactment, on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Florida Agricultural Museum.
More than 200 actors came together from all over Florida to put on the battle for 650 spectators throughout the two-day event.
Attendance was up from past years, and Event Specialist Debbie Milner said she hopes they stay high for the next event on the Ag. Museum’s calendar: the Hunted Trails, which begin Friday, Oct. 19-20, and continue Oct. 26-27.
That event will feature magic shows, carnival games, a haunted house and a haunted wagon ride through the woods runs 6-10 p.m., and costs $10. Attendees are encouraged to wear sensible shoes, "because you never know what might be lurking in the sands beneath your feet."
