Four silhouettes stood at the south end of the Flagler Palm Coast High School track, Saturday, Oct. 13, serving as silent witnesses representing the four women who have been killed in Flagler County due to domestic violence in the past five years.

As the group of participants in the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event passed them, there was a noticeable difference in the pace of men walking to raise awareness of domestic violence. The steps got slower as the stiletto on their Fire Engine-colored red pumps sunk into the gravel track.

Walking heel to toe, the majority of participants were beginning to know what it literally feels like to walk a mile in women’s shoes. They were also learning what it felt like figuratively, too.

As many of the participants finished lap No. 2, a bell rang to signify a rape being reported in Florida. The bell continued to ring at eight-minute intervals, the frequency of a rape report.

The event, put on by the Family Life Center, acted as a march to end domestic violence, sexual assault and gender violence.

To keep the event entertaining, awards were given to three participants who stood out above the rest.

Jomy Barbosa won the first-place award for being the first walker to complete the entire mile in high heels. The Most Swag award was presented to Ray Giaccone for being the walker who exhibited the most sashay and fun during the walk and completing the entire mile in his heels. And the No. 1 volunteer award was given to Dave and Carol Corson, for always going the extra mile.
