Ocean Art Gallery, in Flagler Beach, is holding an Opening Reception 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, for stained glass artist Robert J. Carlton.
Carlton, a Grand Haven resident, has been creating stained glass pieces for more than 25 years.
“My work encompasses a wide variety of subjects ranging from exotic birds and animals from around the world, to the wondrous creatures that inhabit the abundant waters and beaches of Florida,” Carlton said. “I have also derived a great deal of satisfaction creating nature panels of flowers, plants and trees.”
His collection includes whimsical pieces featuring frogs, and also serene pieces depicting waves and trees.
“In every one of my creations, each piece of stained glass is individually hand cut, fitted and painstakingly assembled utilizing copper foil and solder,” he said. “Creating stained glass art is highly labor intensive, and the more complex designs on display have taken 30 to 40 hours to complete.”
A specialty of Carlton’s is the incorporation of worked copper within his stained glass art. In one piece, “Silent Wood,” the worked copper represents the trunk and branches of a tree, and the stained glass represents the leaves, sky and ground. He’s also created pieces that contain mirrors surrounded by stained glass shapes and various characters, such as seahorses.
Carlton is a resident artist in the Ocean Art Gallery, 200 S. Oceanshore Blvd. His art will be featured for the entire month of November. The opening will be held in conjunction with Flagler Beach’s First Friday Music in the Park celebration, which occurs near Ocean Art Gallery. The public is invited to attend.
