Airsoft gun, hard landing
3:15 p.m. -- 600 Block of Fleming Avenue. Suspicious Person. Police were alerted to three males walking through a construction site and received further information that one of them was armed with a silver handgun.
The responding officer rode his police motorcycle along a path of a nearby park and found the three males near a public restroom. In the report, the officer said that, when he made contact with one of the individuals, he "had his left arm held across his chest in such a manner that he was supporting something within his zipped up brown cloth hooded jacket." The officer told the individual why he was confronting him and asked if he had a firearm on him. The individual then turned his body and the officer said he could see the imprint of a firearm. The individual told the officer that it was an airsoft gun.
According to the report, the officer told the individual, twice, not to reach into his jacket for the gun. However, the officer reported the individual began reaching into his jacket with his right hand. This is when the officer said he grabbed the butt of the gun, over the jacket, to control it and took the individual to the ground. Once the officer had the individual on the ground, he reached into the jacket and took out the gun.
After discovering it was, in fact, an airsoft gun, he tossed it out of reach. One of the other individuals informed the officer he had an airsoft gun, as well, and let the officer reach into his jacket to remove it. The officer checked the individuals for warrants and returned their guns. A Use of Force form was completed.
