A Palm Coast man was arrested Sunday after he hit a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputy with his car, pinned him against an Ormond Beach gas pump and then fled the scene.

The deputy found Calvin Robinson, 34, parked at an angle at Loves Truck Stop, 1657 N. U.S. 1, after an employee called early Oct. 28 to report an intoxicated man, who he said could barely walk.

The deputy arrived on scene at 4:46 a.m., parked his patrol car in front of Robinson’s, which had the driver’s door ajar with Robinson in the driver’s seat, and turned on his emergency lights.

According to a Sheriff’s office statement, when Robinson saw the deputy approaching, he tried to close his close his door and was able to shift the car into reverse, while struggling with the deputy.

Robinson then quickly backed up the car, according to a report, pinning the deputy against the gas pumps, which were damaged in the incident.

Robinson then sped away, crashing into the deputy's patrol car in the process, traveling southbound on U.S. 1’s northbound lanes.

The deputy didn’t sustain any serious injuries, but the patrol car had to be towed away.

Law enforcement officers used stop-sticks to puncture the vehicle’s tires at North Nova Road and Old Kings Road. Robinson was then taken into custody.

According to the Sheriff’s office, Robinson “reeked of alcohol, had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, and beer cans were inside the car.”

He was charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, eluding a law enforcement officer, DUI, driving with a suspended license, criminal mischief and resisting an officer with violence.

Robinson, who refused to take a DUI test, had four active suspensions on his driver’s license and admitted to it being invalid.

Foot race

The Ormond Beach Police Department was called early Sunday, Oct. 28, to assist the Holly Hill Police Department with a fleeing vehicle, which was heading northbound into Ormond Beach.

Clinton Kemps, 40, of Daytona Beach, crashed his vehicle at Parque Drive and Arroyo Parkway and continued on foot into Ormond Beach, where he was apprehended by a K-9 unit in the wooded area along the railroad tracks along Fleming Avenue.

The Ormond Beach Police officer responding to the call, found Kemps' a vehicle near railroad tracks and soon heard his voice coming near him. He then saw him walking northbound on the tracks, talking on a cell phone.

As Kemps approached the officer, who attempted to conceal himself, he either saw the patrol car or heard the officer’s radio, according to the report, and ran in the opposite direction.

The officer then identified himself, according to the report, called out for Kemps to stop running, and then began pursuit.

A K-9 unit in the area responded to the officer's call and came to the location. The animal then took over lead pursuit and caught up to Kemps in the woods. He was then arrested and turned over to Holly Hill police.
