Helen McGregor celebrated her 100th birthday Aug. 27.

She was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, and had two sisters, Mildred and Hester. Helen now lives in an apartment in Benton Village.

She graduated from high school in 1929. That fall she entered Mount Union College, graduating in 1933 with teaching credentials. Her father paid entrance fees, and her older sister, Mildred, provided funds for her wardrobe. Helen applied for a job in the school cafeteria and washed dishes, but was quickly promoted to server for the remainder of her college years. After college, she taught elementary school for about 60 years, retiring as a principal.

After retiring, McGregor and Hester saw ads for homes in the new Palm Coast and attended a dinner for more information. Together, they moved to Palm Coast and since they were both retired, they continued to travel extensively to Alaska, Canary Islands, British Isles, Europe and Mexico.

Helen was an avid reader and, until her eyesight began to fail, she typed Braille books for the blind.

Now she uses “talking books” and has a viewer which magnifies book pages to enable her to see the
printed work. Her large-screen TV helps her to keep up with current events, and she can and does converse about world issues with anyone who visits.

She is a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.
