The Big Red Bus was parked in front of Matanzas High School Friday, Aug. 31, for the first of five scheduled blood drives throughout the year.
Sixty-five students gave blood in the drive, which was the first Flagler County school drive since the district signed up for a partnership with Florida Blood Centers to earn scholarship money. The high schools will qualify for funds based on the total number of units collected throughout the year.
“The plan is to give the schools a little more incentive. It is geared toward the high schools, because their students are of age to donate,” said Robin Lindsey, donor development coordinator for Flagler County.
Matanzas has drives scheduled for November, January, March and May, to coincide with when donors will be eligible to give again. Flagler Palm Coast High School will hold its first drive of the year in November.
“Only 40% of the population is eligible to give at any time,” Lindsey said. “With the high demand for blood, the centers usually only have a five- to six-day supply on hand.”
