A 53-year-old Bunnell man was killed Monday evening when he veered off U.S. 1, about .3 miles north of Old Dixie Highway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

John Melvin was driving his 2003 Honda motorcycle around 5:11 p.m., traveling southbound on U.S. 1 in the outside lane. As Melvin attempted to navigate a left curve in the road, he traveled off the paved portion of the road onto the grass shoulder, the report states. Melvin then overturned.

He slid into the tree line and struck a tree. The motorcycle continued sliding southbound in the grass.

Melvin was pronounced dead at the scene because of injuries sustained from the crash. The investigation is ongoing, as alcohol has not been ruled out by the Florida Highway Patrol.

“(Melvin) was not utilizing a safety helmet at the time of the collision, and speed does not appear to be a factor,” the report states.
