Even though one of the only real seasons we get in Florida is Hurricane season, the start of football season and bathing suite sales tell me that the rest of the country is preparing for fall. And with the official start of fall, it’s time for my kitchen to transition into fall flavors.
Apples are one of the quintessential fall flavors and the perfect ingredient to continue the quest for healthy eating.
But apples, like anything healthy can grow routine and tiresome. Rather than baking them with a ton of sugar and a pie crust, I was trying to come up with a way to pull out the natural sweetness of the apple, while preserving the good-for-you vibe. Apple chips seemed to be the perfect solution.
Although I had never made apple chips before, I was convinced that it would be a simple snack to bake. After scouring the county for an apple corer, which was nowhere to be found, I resorted to using a pointed tip peeler to carve out the cores of two apples before slicing them and baking them with cinnamon. Cinnamon is key.
While this sweet snack ended up being extremely easy to make, it did require almost two hours of baking time. But the sweet fall aroma that filled my condo made the wait well worth while.
Baked apple chips
What you will need:
2 apples
Cinnamon
What to do:
Remove apple core and thinly slice the entire apple. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place apple slices on it. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Bake at 275 degrees for two hours. At the end of hour one flip them over so they bake evenly and check again in 30 min. When I flipped, I sprinkled for cinnamon for good measure.
