Barbara Revels, chairwoman of the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners, said some constituents have approached her with concern about the red light cameras on State Road 100.

"There are certain citizens who don't want to face that last-minute decision (at a yellow light)," she said in Wednesday's board meeting. "They have to risk either a ticket or being rammed."

Revels said these residents are avoiding Palm Coast when shopping, but that they feel trapped with the cameras on State Road 100, because they can't get to the freeway without meeting one.

Nate McLaughlin, vice chairman of the board, said he didn't think it was appropriate to ask Palm Coast not to put red light cameras at intersections with the road in question, but that accidents tend to increase at intersections with cameras because people are more likley to slam on their brakes to avoid being ticketed.

The commissioners said that the city of Palm Coast is entitled to place those cameras, but opted to draft a letter requesting that they do not.

Palm Coast recently announced a plan to increase the number of cameras in the city from 10 to more than 52.
