It’s time to dust off the old piano; the city of Bunnell wants to know if you have what it takes to be the next Bunnell Idol.

As part of its upcoming Centennial Celebration in 2013, the city is inviting all legal residents 13 and older to submit self-composed songs capturing the essence of the crossroads of Flagler County. The winning submission will become the official song of Bunnell.

Records show that back in the day there was a Bunnell song written by Walter S. Morris sung to the tune of “Are you from Dixie?” That song certainly remains in the memory of the town's ancestors and is representative of its roots, but the city is looking for a new tune that represents not only the roots, but also the present and the future, with a melody that appeals to vibrant generations.

Some of the stipulations of the contest are that the word “Bunnell” and the phrase “the crossroads of Flagler County” should be included in the lyrics, and the content and melody are original with no copyright infringement.

Those who wish to enter the contest must write a song, record it and send it with a completed application form to the city of Bunnell no later than Monday, Oct. 29.

Songs should be approximately three minutes in length, suitable for groups as well as soloists, and be submitted on a lead sheet that includes lyrics, melodic line and chords. Contest entries must be submitted by an individual, not a group, and cannot mention any specific business or person. Each participant may submit up to two songs, but each song should be submitted as separate entries.

Submission packages must include four copies of the song on compact disc, one song per CD; four copies of the lead sheet, including lyrics, melodic line and chords, (does not need to be professionally scored) and four copies of the completed application with signatures as required.

After the submission period closes, a panel of judges will choose the top three songs and allow the public to vote for their favorite on the city’s Facebook page.

The winner will receive a plaque from the city, and a Centennial Celebration package.

Application and rules are available on the city’s website.
