The Flagler Palm Coast cross-country team began its season Saturday, Sept. 8, with the Spikes and Spurs Classic, at the Flagler County Fairgrounds.
The boys team, which is currently ranked seventh in the state, finished in second place behind No. 1-ranked Colonial High School.
The girls team finished third overall.
The boys runner of the week was Thomas Carroll, finishing in fourth place at the Spikes and Spurs Classic and first overall for FPC in a personal-record time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds. It was a 14-second PR.
The girls runner of the week was Devonne Friday. Friday finished 13th and was the No. 2 runner for the Lady Bulldogs, finishing in a time of 21:36. Friday, who is a hurdler for the Lady Bulldogs track team, is competed in her first cross country season.
FPC coach David Halliday said he was a proud coach this weekend. Several runners finished the race with a personal best. “Let’s build in this success,” he said.
Next up, FPC will compete in the Mountain Dew Invitational, in Gainesville.
FHSAA selects Matanzas’ Christina Reynolds to Student Advisory Committee
Matanzas High School student-athlete Christina Reynolds will be one of three students representing the Florida High School Athletic Association Section 2, which comprises 187 high schools, on the Student Advisory Committee, the organization announced Friday, Sept. 7.
Reynolds is the first Flagler County student to be selected onto the committee.
“This is a great accomplishment for Christina,” Matanzas Athletics Director Kenny Seybold said Friday. “She will be a tremendous ambassador not only for Flagler County student-athletes, but all student-athletes throughout the state.”
Reynolds is a member of the varsity golf and softball teams at Matanzas.
The mission of the FHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to serve as a crucial link in identifying topics, issues and concerns that face the student-athletes of Florida.
The committee will meet Oct. 5, at the FHSAA offices in Gainesville.
Palm Coast Little League to host free softball pitching clinic
Palm Coast Little League, in conjunction with Matanzas High School, will host a free softball pitching clinic for beginners 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, and then for intermediate players 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on the same day, at the Indian Trails Sports Complex.
The Lady Pirates coaching staff will provide instruction. All pitchers must have a catcher (which can be anyone).
