By 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, Mary Ann Hilton’s second-grade class was ready to learn. But this was no ordinary science lesson. On the day off from school, the class had ditched the classroom at Imagine School at Town Center for the cool breeze at Flagler Beach to witness the cleaning of the turtle nest adopted by the class.
“I really wanted to make everything in science a hands-on experience for kids this year,” Hilton said.
Although the class has not done its animal unit yet, Hilton said she was looking forward to focusing on animals that are specific to the region. Loggerhead nest FB102 was the perfect place to start.
The nest, found around 10th St. N., in Flagler Beach, yielded 96 hatched eggs and five un-hatched eggs.
Although no live baby turtles were found during the survey, the second-graders said the experience was still a great one.
“I thought it was really amazing,” said student Victoria Dolamore.
For the teacher, it was all about helping the students come out of their shells.
