The Hispanic American Club of Palm Coast celebrated the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month with a twirl of a skirt and a dip of a hat Saturday, Sept. 15, at its annual Pan American Festival.

Traditional folklore performances set the mood for the night.

Hispanic Heritage Month began in September 1968, when Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week that included Sept. 15 and Sept.16.

The observance was expanded in 1988 by Congress to a month-long celebration, effective the following year.

According to the most recent census, 52 million people in the United States are of Hispanic origin, making it the nation's largest ethnic or race minority.
