Radiology Associates Imaging Care brings 22 board-certified radiologists to Northeast Florida, providing what George Kastroulis believes is healthy competition to the area’s medical market.

“We need competition in the market," said Kastroulis, the director of business development for the company. "We need to learn to shop around when seeking health care.”

Kastroulis said that because the center is billed on an outpatient fee schedule, it is sometimes less expensive for patients to seek imaging services there than in a traditional inpatient facility.

And competition is an important part of medical markets, said Doug Baxter, president of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates, because it leads to more options for the consumer. More options means a better chance of finding a health care provider that is covered by a resident's insurance.

Among its services for the heart, the new Town Center Radiology clinic offers echocardiography, CT scans, MRI scans and nuclear heart scans.

It also has equipment that is also able to detect Alzheimer’s disease from its earliest stages.

In addition, its best PET scanner allows radiologists to inject an isotope in a patient’s body and calculate to within one billionth of a second the place where a specific photon originated. That makes it easier to locate and treat cancerous cells.

“The only reason we can (offer this technology) is because we are owned not by a company, but by the 22 radiologists who work here,” Kastroulis said. “They all live here. They say, ‘This is our place, our community, our home, and we only want the best.'”

The equipment at the center is all funded by the doctors who use them. As an example, its Time of Flight angiography, which is an MRI technique that allows for precise imaging of blood vessels, cost the radiologists about $3 million.

“Our goal is to provide the best service there is,” Kastroulis said. “Technologically, this is one of the most advances centers in the Southeast.”
