Seventh-grade students gathered around a podium Thursday, Sept. 20, in Cami Brocksmith’s class at Imagine School at Town Center. Donning powdered wigs and bonnets, they passed around a feather pen and recited the following words: “We the people of 7C have the right to sit wherever we want.”
The students continued until they recited all the rights laid out in their class constitution.
The activity was in honor of Constitution Week, celebrating the 225th anniversary of the signing of the
Constitution of the United States.
“With history, you've got to bring it alive,” Brocksmith said. “So in order for them to really understand the laws of our land and how our government really works — the three branches — this was a good way of them realizing that this is an important document and that our country runs on this document.”
For students like Emma McNally, the change from reading a text book does a lot to help her remember material.
“Sometimes that can be really boring, because you’re not interacting,” she said. “ I like being able to act it out, because then it sinks into my brain a lot more.”
