The Family Life Center will host a fundraising event, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, 9-10:30 a.m. Oct. 13, to raise awareness about sexual and domestic violence and raise money to provide services for survivors.

The walk, which will take place on the track at Flagler Palm Coast High School, 5500 E. Highway 100, will require male and female participants to walk the mile in high heels. The event will kickoff a week prior with a 30-minute radio special with Abby Santiago-Monroe, on the WNZF “Healthy, Wealthy & Wise” show that, which airs 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, on 106.3 FM.

“It’s not just a woman’s issue,” said Trish Giaccone, executive director of the Family Life Center. “Sexual and domestic violence does not just affect women. It affects men and it affects the women men care about.”

At the event, silent witnesses will be dedicated to the memory of four Flagler County women who lost their lives because of domestic violence. Each silhouette will have the first name, age, county and basic description of the lethal event that ended the woman’s life. This display is being used by the Family Life Center to honor the lives lost and to raise awareness of these serious crimes.

“Each victim stands as a silent witness to the terrible cost of sexual and domestic violence,” Giaccone said. “It is our hope that by sharing their stories, we can help move all of us closer to ending violence against women in Flagler County.”
