Leydiana Martin: Rotary’s Athlete of Month
Leydiana Martin, a senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School, was named as the Rotary Student-Athlete of the Month for September.
Martin is a defensive specialist on the Lady Bulldogs volleyball team.
She is an honors and IB student with a 3.8 GPA. She hopes to attend the University of Miami and study engineering.
“Leydiana Martin embodies what a student-athlete should be,” FPC volleyball coach Shakirah Cousins said. “Taking care of business on the court and in the classroom, I know she will be very successful in life.”
Coed softball tourney to help the Poppe family
A coed softball tournament is being organized to help Steve and Sarah Poppe — coaches at Flagler Palm Coast High School.
On March 12, the Poppes had twins, but one of the twins, Noelle, was born with a rare birth defect known as omphalocele, in which the infant’s intestine or other abdominal organs stick out of the belly button.
Although surgery was done to repair the defect, the doctors had to put a gastrointestinal tube in her stomach because she will not drink her bottle. She has had difficulty gaining weight.
Sarah Poppe said that the doctors have repaired the omphalocele, and that Noelle is gaining weight every day.
“She will be getting hernia surgery and based on how much weight she gained, the doctors will determine if she needs the stomach surgery,” Poppe said. That surgery would essentially wrap the top of her stomach to help keep the food from coming back up.
The coed tournament will be Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Flagler County Fairgrounds. It will be a double-elimination tournament and will also include a home run derby and a raffle. Cost is $150 per team, and all proceeds will help pay for Noelle’s medical costs.
Registration is open until Sept. 26.
Checks made out to Steven and Sarah Poppe can be mailed to 35 Whittingham Lane, Palm Coast, 32137.
