An apparent drug smuggling boat that capsized offshore of Jacksonville earlier this month floated onto a sandbar near Beverly Beach Sunday afternoon with some 150 pounds of marijuana aboard.
Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 2995 North A1A around 4:11 p.m. in response to a report of a capsized boat offshore with marijuana bails floating to shore.
Deputies contacted the United States Coast Guard and were informed that the boat had capsized Sept. 2 offshore of Jacksonville. The boat had been checked by the Coast Guard, who deteremined no one was on board. The boat has no markings or registration.
The 30-foot, twin engine boat apparently broke free and drifted south where it lodged on a sandbar about 50-feet from shore near Beverly Beach Camptown. The marijuana bails began washing ashore Sunday afternoon and were retrieved by deputies.
The Florida Wildife Commisson was contacted regarding the boat.
