As a cool breeze swept across Palm Harbor Golf Club on Thursday, the Matanzas Pirates continued their dominance this season, upending Father Lopez, 172-192.
Carter Subers led the Pirates finishing his nine-hole round with a 42. Nick Jahn also shot a 42. Patrick Morris finished with a 43, and Anthony Hunter, who has been the Pirates’ hottest golfer, finished with a 45. Liam Thoubboron shot a 47, and Dylan Mulligan shot a 48.
The win improved the Pirates' record to 15-5 this season as they prepare for the Volusia/Flagler tournament, which will include Spruce Creek, the area’s top team.
Last week, the Pirates finished sixth out of 10 teams in the St. Johns River Athletic Conference tournament.
“It’s a pretty good season so far,” coach Ray Sykes said Thursday after the team’s win over Lopez. “But, to tell you the truth, we’re not playing as well as we could. I think we look a lot better than we really are right now.”
The Pirates are young, though, as the team features one senior and five freshman.
Sykes said some of the top teams are Spruce Creek, Niese and Ponte Vedra, all of which are in Matanzas’ district. “It’s tough to even get out of the district,” he said.
Right now, Sykes said his Pirates are slightly below the top level of teams, but as his players mature and get better, the team should be able to compete with the elite schools.
The Volusia/Flagler tournament will be Monday, Oct. 1, at the Palm Harbor Golf Club. Tee times will begin at 11 a.m.
The district tournament will be Oct. 15, in Orange Park.
