First, they give us something to write about almost every week in the newspaper. Second, they give the county and city one more thing to argue about, which is always entertaining. Third, they work.
As a society, we agree to live with laws that protect us. One that I've always been a fan of is not letting anyone crash into me when I have a green light. In fact, I have never met anyone who thinks traffic signals should be eliminated. (OK, I've met a few roundaboutophiles, but really.) So why do we get so many letters saying red light cameras are evil?
The legality of the cameras has been challeged in courts around the state, it's true, but I hope the cameras stay in Palm Coast. Contrary to popular belief, they do not amount to a cash cow for the city; the fees pay for the cost of the cameras — that's about it.
We're talking about a tool that enforces a law that we all agree is a good law, and it costs the taxpayers nothing. I wish we had more tools like this. If a company could sell a device that would zap my children whenever they broke the Flush The Toilet After You're Done Act of 2008, I would order two of them.
And this might sound too obvious, but what's wrong with just following the rules, not crashing into anyone, and not paying any fees?
