The line of cars wrapped around Sawgrass Road and backed up to the railroad tracks on County Road 13 Saturday, March 30. As parking at the fairgrounds filled up, cars were re-routed to the Flagler County Recreational Area.

Smokey barbecue wafted over the sea of people waiting in line for their portion of the famous Cracker Day lunch. A recliner sat surrounded by lawn chairs, left in their spots from the long night of rotating beef, which filled four large barbecue pits, every 30 minutes, for the past 12 hours. All part of tradition, for the Buckles family.

Presented by the Flagler County Cattleman’s Association, the 58th-annual Flagler County Cracker Day rodeo had a rough start when a bull escaped its shoot during the opening ceremony. Though one woman suffered minor injuries when the bull took a short run outside of the arena, he was quickly wrangled back into the holding area.

This year’s event was dedicated to Oscar Roberts. Roberts moved to Bunnell in 1973, with his wife Rosellen, and owned Atlantic Roofing for 50 years. He has four children; Virginia Brewer, Margaret McClure, Billy Roberts and Daryl “Catfish” Roberts; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The Roberts’ still run cattle along Haw Creek with the help of their children and grandchildren.
