Chris Santana continued his quest to become a state champion on Saturday, taking first place in the Class 1A sectionals meet and automatically qualifying for the state meet.
Santana bench-pressed 240 pounds and lifted 270 pounds in the clean-and-jerk for a 510-pound total. He will return to the state meet for the second year in a row. He finished second last year.
As a team, the Iron Pirates collected 36 points, finishing second to first-place finisher Baker County (58 points).
Seven other Matanzas lifters could earn a spot in the state meet, but that depends on how other teams did across the state.
All lifters who finish in the top four of their respective weight class are placed into a pool of lifters and could be elligble for states if their totals are among the top four.
Matanzas coach Joey Lippo said he expects to find out who made it by Tuesday.
Liam Thoubboron, Peter Corey, Coy Sprunger, Marquese Jones, Dyllan Fagas, Travis Thompson and Alex Kubiet all still have a chance at continuing their season.
Troy Magnuson and Rahim Booker both narrowly missed advancing after placing fifth.
