It’s that time of the month again. The walls at the City Marketplace galleries have been striped and rehung for new shows set to open 6-9 p.m. Saturday, April 13.
Hollingsworth Gallery will change things up a bit this month by featuring work from The Beaux Art Group, out of Volusia County.
“We chose to have the show at Hollingsworth because it was a wonderful venue last time,” said Connie Krzyzowski , exhibit chair of The Beaux Art Group. “J.J. (Graham) puts on a phenomenal opening — with music and refreshments — it’s nice and spacious and a beautiful place.”
The show, A Novel Idea, features artwork based on novels read by the authors.
“It’s very diverse – everybody has come up with fascinating paintings, sculpture and collages,” said Krzyzowski.
One painting featured, “Tent City” by Jean Banas, was inspired by B. Swerling’s “City of Dreams.” In the book, the author describes an episode in which a group of “Black New Yorkers,” enraged because of their brutal treatment, burned homes and killed families living in the Wall Street area. In retaliation, the white settlers burned the perpetrators alive.
A burning building in the upper left corner of her painting portrays that event.
The opening at Hollingsworth will also feature live music by More Hazards More Heroes, a Nashville folk duo, with Palm Coast ties.
“Anytime you can support young music on the road is a good thing,” said Graham, Hollingsworth curator.
Several doors down, the Flagler County Art League will hold an opening reception for the Spring Show, which is in its 11th year, previously named Art in the Park.
This non-themed show will feature close to 100 pieces ranging in medium.
“It’s quiet a nice show, outstanding actually,” said Bob Ammon, director of shows and exhibitions for the art league. “I’m overwhelmed with the fact that in every one of our shows we’ve had entries well beyond what I expected.”
One artist who has entered work in every show since she joined the art league 12 years ago is Joan Howard. For this show, Howard has entered two colored pencil pieces and a watercolor. Although she won’t know what until Saturday night, Howard said she was already told that she had won an award fro one of the pieces in the show.
“It’s going to be the fifth show in a row that I’ve won something,” she said. “It’s just so excited to really be recognized by your pears like that.”
This month’s show was judged by well-known artist and teacher Kate P. Miller.
Hollingsworth Gallery is located at 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite 209B and the Flagler County Art League is Suite 207C.
