Walgreens, hospital partnership yields free bedside prescription delivery program
Florida Hospital Flagler in Palm Coast and Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City have both partnered with Walgreens to provide a free bedside prescription delivery for patients being discharged home.
“Typically, patients are discharged with prescriptions that need to be filled for their at-home care,” said James Baker, director of patient experience for Florida Hospital Flagler. “This means the caregiver must either delay taking the patient home immediately after discharge so that they can make a trip to the drugstore to fill the prescriptions, or they can take the patient home directly after discharge and then leave them there to go to the drugstore. Understandably, this is quite inconvenient for both the caregiver and the patient.”
The hours for the free delivery program are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, for patients who do not want their prescriptions delivered during those hours, or when delivery is needed after hours, through an additional service called “Prompt Pick-up,” in which Walgreens expedites prescription filling so patients can pick them up through drive-through windows.
Additionally, Walgreens pharmacists place a follow-up call to patients 48 hours post-discharge to answer questions about their medication and provide patient education.
“This is a service we are pleased to offer our patients who choose to participate in this new program,” said Jennifer Shull, vice president and chief nursing officer of Florida Hospital Fish Memorial. “With this additional resource, we hope to see a higher medication compliance with our patients.”
