The date was April 22, 1970. The event: the birth of the modern environmental movement in the United States and the first Earth Day.
More than 40 years later, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park celebrated the ode to the earth with a two-day festival that included live entertainment, living history re-enactors, environmental groups, and arts and crafts.
The 24th-annual Earth Day Celebration was a little wet, but park Service Specialist Melissa Kafel said the rain is all part of Mother Nature, and it is treated as a special guest during the celebration.
While the new stage at the park was set to be completed and debuted this weekend, a few hiccups required the old stage to be used. It was the final appearance for the old, wooden stage. The permanent stage will be completed by the end of next week.
