As the sun set over the golf course April 20, a sellout crowd gathered in the ball room at the Grand Club at Pine Lakes for a Heroes Campaign Benefit Ball Dinner Show, hosted by Wanda and Paul Denice.

Wanda Denice has been a Red Cross volunteer since 1999, and this is the second time she has hosted a heroes benefit to raise money for local disaster relief. As a retired New York City police officer and a veteran of the U.S. Army, Denice said her efforts are because she loves volunteering.

“I love helping people," she said. "When you go to the disaster, you see so much and it’s such a good feeling trying to help these other people."

The Heroes Campaign is a grassroots effort that asks members of community to raise $1,000 through an event, all of which goes to disaster relief. In the mid-Florida region, the local Red Cross responds to about 750 home fires a year. All of the assistance they provide is free.
