Lady Pirates fall to Ponte Vedra, advance to states
For the second year in a row, the Matanzas softball team lost to Ponte Vedra in the District 4-5A softball championship, losing 7-1.

Matanzas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Ponte Vedra went on to score seven unanswered runs to close out the game.

“We played tough, and I was proud of our girls,” coach Sara Novak said. “It’s disappointing losing to them in back-to-back district championship games, but it’s still a big accomplishment to come home with back-to-back runner-up trophies for the softball program at Matanzas.”

Marisa Magnuson went 1-for-3 and drove in Matanzas’ lone run.

Despite the loss, Matanzas advances to the Class 5A state playoffs and will travel to play Baker County 8 p.m. Wednesday, in regional quarterfinals.
