This weekend marks the much anticipated back-to-school sales tax holiday. Tax-free weekend starts Friday, Aug. 2 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 4.

Florida law directs that no sales tax or local option tax (also known as discretionary sales surtax) will be collected on sales of clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $75 or less per item, on certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item, and on personal computers and certain related accessories selling for $750 or less per item, when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use.

The exemption will apply no matter how many items are sold on the same invoice to a customer.
The addition of tax exemption on personal computers and certain related accessories for personal use is new for the 2013 holiday. Books are not exempt from sales tax.

Host families needed for exchange students
Four more families are needed to host exchange students for this coming school year. Students come with their own spending money and only need a home and a family environment. Possible native countries include Germany, Sweden, Indonesia and Turkey.

In the past, Flagler Palm Coast High School administrator Steve DeAugustino has been particularly supportive of the program, according to Mindy Melendez, local coordinator with Council of International Education Exchange. Past exchange students have been able to attend prom and participate in the graduation experience by receiving a special certificate.

For more information, call Melendez at 313-1728.
