Luciano Arce, 80, of Palm Coast, was invited by the Department of Defense to Washington, D.C., to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. Arce served on the frontlines of Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He was part of the U.S. Army’s 65th Infantry, 3rd Division, Company B.
The week began with an invitation for a special Twilight Tattoo commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War, hosted by Secretary of the Army Dr. Joseph W. Westphal and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington. Twilight Tattoo is one of the Army’s most popular outdoor ceremonial programs in D.C.-metro area.
They were then treated to a special evening parade for Korean War veterans, featuring the U.S. Marine Band. Arce and his family also had the honor of meeting the commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James F. Amos.
The culminating moment of the week was being VIP guests to the “Heroes Remembered” signing of the Korean War Armistice at the Korean War Memorial, where President Barack Obama addressed the masses.
Arce’s daughter Ivey Rodriguez said: “There are no words to describe the waves of pride and emotion we felt as we watched my father be honored along with his brothers in arms. Throughout the years, my father rarely speaks of his time in Korea because he suffered witnessing so many losses. However, my father very proudly has said, ‘A soldier becomes a soldier to serve his country.’
“He doesn’t serve for the money or prestige; he serves because he is willing to sacrifice his own future to protect the future of the country he loves.’”
