A kick-off party was held Thursday night in honor of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Palm Coast Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The purpose of the kick-off party was to register teams and get people interested in the event.
“We are really excited about this year; we’re off to a great start,” said Laura Zublionis, volunteer coordinator for the walk. “We all know someone who has been touched by someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia.”
In addition to raising money to help fight the disease, the walk is also about showing everyone they are part of a bigger community.
“They are part of their community here in Palm Coast, but they are also part of a sub-community, which is a group that wants to put an end to the disease,” said Cindy Godwin, director of development for the Alzheimer’s Association. “We want to get the whole community involved. Right now, in Florida, there are 450,000 people living with Alzheimer’s, so that not only affects the person with the disease, but their family members and caregivers.”
This is the third year the walk will be in Flagler as the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Previously, it was the Memory Walk, but that name proved to be ambiguous, with people walking in memory of someone or for someone’s memory.
“It is an action event, we want to see an end to the disease,” Godwin said.
The walk will be 8 a.m. Sept. 7, at Town Center. To register a team or as an individual, visit Alz.org/walk and search for Palm Coast.
