Many of us were told as children that if we weren't good, on Christmas morning, instead of having a stocking full of goodies, we would get a stocking full of coal.

As an adult, I have been very tempted to give family members (well, mostly my sister’s boyfriends) coal for Christmas. But I never quite felt like I could get away with such a clever-yet-passive-aggressive act.

Until now.

I saw some recipes online this year for a way to make edible coal: aka chocolate rice Krispy treats in lumps instead of squares. While making these treats, I made a few adjustments to the recipe.

This play on coal is one of pure deliciousness. A couple of friends might be getting some coal this year. But don't worry: It'll be the good kind.

Eatable coal
What you need:
3 tablespoons butter
1 bag marshmallows
1 teaspoon vanilla
5 cups Cocoa Krispy’s
1 cup crushed Oreos
black food coloring

What to do:
Pour the Krispy’s and Oreos in a large mixing bowl. Set aside.

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium high heat until melted. Turn the heat down to the lowest setting and add the marshmallows. Stir until the marshmallows are mostly melted. This will take a few minutes.

Add in the vanilla and black food coloring (keep adding until you get the color you want) and finish melting.

Once fully melted, take off heat and pour over the Krispy mixture. Stir to combine until everything is black. Dump by the spoonful onto a greased cookie sheet, so they look like funky coal shapes. Allow to cool about 20 minutes.
