The Seabreeze wrestling team placed six wrestlers in the top six Saturday, at the Wildcat Invitational, at Ocala Forest High School. The 16-team tournament featured teams from Florida and Georgia. Alecsander Smith had the best finish, placing second in the 220-pound class.
Individual results are as follows:
126 pounds: Mike Sampson, fourth
160: Chris Whalen, sixth
170: Matt Kohler, sixth
195: Carlos Garcia, sixth
220: Alecsander Smith, second
285 pounds: James Curtis, sixth
Next up, Seabreeze will compete Dec. 18 against Atlantic. Then, the Sandcrabs will wrestle in the Bill Scott Holiday Tournament Dec. 20-21, at Lyman High School.
Hospital golf tourney hits hole-in-one
It was a day of swinging clubs, but it turned into so much more than that.
The Florida Hospital Memorial Foundation hosted its fourth-annual golf tournament Nov. 1, at LPGA International, in Daytona Beach.
The sold out, scramble-format tournament raised more than $100,000 to benefit Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as the development of a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the foundation announced in a statement.
In addition to registration fees, each team had an option to donate $100 to fund a mammogram for local women in need, and in doing so, received two strokes off their score. The Tracy Dillion Mammogram Fundraisers matched the $2,800 raised by the golfers, enabling Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center to provide 56 sponsored mammograms.
"This is a tremendous gesture by the community, and I was so proud to be a part of it,” said Daryl Tol, Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center CEO. “Support from the community is vital to our organization, and we are extremely grateful.”
Thirty-six teams of golfers participated in this annual event. With a score of 56, the winning team representing Carter Electric consisted of Bob Bragg, Gary Dover, Roy Gailey and Wake Gailey.
Angel Colon, from Robins and Morton, aced the third hole (par 3) and won $10,000.
Volusia County Open coming
Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club, in Ormond Beach, will host the 2013 Volusia County Open Men’s Golf Championship on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21 and 22, at Club de Bonmont, North-South Course.
Maria Tuohy, general manager at Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club, said a new professional division and added amateur divisions this year should create a strong field of entries.
“The Volusia County Open Men’s Golf Championship tournament consists of two days of stroke medal play on the North-South course at Club de Bonmont,” Tuohy said in a statement.
The lowest 36-hole score from the professional and amateur divisions will get the Volusia County Open Champion’s jacket.
The Volusia County Open Men’s Golf Championship tournament is open to all male golfers except professionals who have current status on a PGA Tour. Amateurs may compete in any division they wish so long as they meet age requirements.
Prizes will be awarded to one overall champion as well as division champions. Divisional and flight prizes will also be awarded.
Flights will be determined by first day score and the size of the field.
Entry fees are $225 for professional class and $150 for amateur class. The entry fee includes two rounds of golf and one practice round, cart fee ($23 plus tax), the awards luncheon on the final day and prizes.
Tournament entries are accorded privileges at the Club de Bonmont practice facility prior to tournament rounds.
