Joining the wrestling program at Flagler Palm Coast High School means student-athletes are joining a family. They are joining a group of individuals who will work hard every day to carry on the legacy of the program.
Second-year coach Tom Bartolotta knows that.
“We’re just trying to keep the tradition going and have a great season,” Bartolotta said Thursday, just a day after his team topped Titusville Astronaut, 45-24, to improve to 15-0 this season. “We’re deep, and we have a lot of kids on the team.”
Deep, actually, is probably an understatement. Bartolotta has 62 wrestlers on this year’s team, and many of them are underclassmen.
“We have very few seniors,” he said. “We’re very deep. A lot of the kids don’t’ wrestle because we don’t have matches for them.”
The depth has certainly helped lead the Bulldogs to a perfect start. (Flagler Palm Coast wrestled in the Cougar Invitational in Tampa over the weekend, but the results were too late for print.)
A crop of talented wrestlers are leading the way for the Bulldogs this season. Jake Kosachiner, wrestling in the 120-pound class, improved to 19-0 after his pin Wednesday night over his opponent from Astronaut. Jackson Trivett, wrestling in the 160-pound class, is also undefeated (14-0).
Several wrestlers have one or two losses, including Alfred Shavers, Evyn Insalaco, Korey Bryl, Justin Boyle, Kaz Maia, Zac Branning and Jonathan Muniz.
Bartolotta said many of those guys could be undefeated, but they have been wrestling up a weight class
“We work hard year-round,” Bartolotta said. “The kids put in a lot of time in the offseason. Also, the kids know there are very, very high expectations here.”
Flagler Palm Coast has won three state wrestling titles and has had multiple runner-up finishes.
The Bulldogs will have a very busy early part of 2014, too. FPC will host the Flagler Rotary tournament on Jan. 10-11, and then FPC will wrestle in the 5-Star Conference Meet on Jan. 18, in New Smyrna Beach.
The district meet will be Feb. 1.
