For the first time in Matanzas girls weightlifting history, the Lady Iron Pirates have a conference champion.

Kayla Short, who is still recovering from a minor back injury, took the St. Johns River Championship in the unlimited weight class at the conference meet last week by 40 pounds.

Short bench-pressed 175 pounds and clean-and-jerked 125 pounds for a 300-pound total.

The Lady Iron Pirates as a team finished tied for fifth in the conference — the highest the team has placed at the conference meet since the program started.

Earlier this week, Matanzas continued its impressive season, winning a tri-meet over Seabreeze and Atlantic.

The win moved Matanzas to 10-1 this season.

Matanzas’ individual winners are as follows: 119 pounds: Evans 110-105—215; Walker 115-125—240; 169: (tie) Stuart (M), 115-130—245; Unlimited: Short 180-130—310.
