Flagler Sheriff’s employee places first in state competition
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office custodian Jerry Smith was throwing some weight around last weekend in Ft. Myers and, as a result, he took first place in a statewide competition sponsored by the Florida Sports Foundation.
Smith was awarded first place in the state championship competition for bench pressing by pressing 295-pounds in the 55-59-year-old class.
But Smith is no stranger to state championship titles. In 2012, he set a state record for bench pressing 303-pounds in the same division and took the championship.
“I was trying to beat my old record, but 295 was as good as I could do this year,” Smith said. “I’m happy with it.”
Smith began weightlifting about 30 years ago when he was in the Navy. He started competing in the Florida International Senior Games, sponsored by the Foundation, about 10 years ago. He has been employed with the Sheriff’s Office since March.
