Let's take a look back at Ormond Beach sports in 2013, through quotes from the athletes themselves.

BY ANDREW O'BRIEN | SPORTS EDITOR

Every year around this time, people reflect back, and we're no different here at the paper. As we scan through the sports coverage over the past 12 months, here are some of the most memorable quotes from players and coaches in Ormond Beach sports.

FEBRUARY

“I knew that I could help my team win. So, I looked at the clock, it was 42-40, and I knew that if I made these two free throws, we win. I get a ring. We get a championship, a state championship. … So I just went up there and made my free throws.”

— Father Lopez girls basketball player Simone Brown on making her free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining, sealing the state title for the Green Wave last season

MARCH

“That felt good. You have to run your heart out. You never know what’s going to happen.”

— Seabreeze baseball player Tanner Rachal after a crucial 3-2 win last season

JUNE

“When on the field, I look at my father just as I would any other coach. Although there’s times when I know he is harder on me, I truly appreciate it because I know he is pushing me to be the best I can possibly be. I am blessed to have the opportunity to play for my father.”

— Alana Hand, who plays softball for her father, Alan

AUGUST

“I don’t pay attention to anything else when I am racing. When you’re going that fast, you can’t second-guess. You just commit.”

— 14-year-old motocross racer Dawson Stark, 14

“He is probably 70 pounds soaking wet on a team with kids as high as 170 pounds, but Zachery’s big heart and effort drives him to mix it up with the rest of them. Sometimes kids with autism (or any other disabilities) just need a chance and a little patience, and good things can happen.”

— Ormond Beach Pride coach Brian Colubiale on one of his players, Zachery Herrin

OCTOBER

“To get into the playoffs, and us achieving the goal, I think most of the Green Wave nation is happy and ecstatic. It’s a lot of fun, but we still have a lot of hard work ahead of us.”

— Father Lopez football coach Jason Dunlap on his team securing its first playoff berth since 2005

There were plenty of ups and downs in sports this year. It was a lot of fun. And I’m sure next year will be even better. See you in 2014!
